Coconut Joe’s Hawaiian Bar and Grill on the South River: A Slice of Vacation, Minutes from Annapolis

By: Natalie Spong

If it’s flip flops, blue skies, palm trees and the best Orange Crushes on the planet, then it must be summer and it can only be Coconut Joe’s. Yes, the winter was especially cold and spring arrived late, but scarcely 15 minutes into my first Orange Crush of the season, the sun sparkling on the South River at the Annapolis Area’s largest Tiki bar, and winter was so GONE

Coming to Annapolis for Commissioning Week? Where to Meet and Eat

By: Mary Lou Baker

Each May, Annapolis gears up to celebrate Commissioning Week at the United States Naval Academy—including yours truly, whose SEAL son graduated a few years ago. Seems like yesterday that family members flew in from San Francisco and Savannah to celebrate his graduation. While many folks rent houses for the week and others stay in hotels or B&Bs, where to meet and eat is an ongoing question for out-of-towners, so here are some suggestions.

Meet the Locals: Gavin Buckley

By: Symmetry

On a recent hot August afternoon, I sat down at a table in the shade outside Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge (169 West St, Annapolis) with the restaurant’s co-owner Gavin Buckley. Almost everyone who walked by stopped to chat with Gavin, making me feel like I was in the presence of a local celebrity. In addition […]

Meet the Locals: Rusty Romo

By: Symmetry

Rusty Romo fell hard and early for the hospitality industry. By the time he was 20, with years of restaurant and catering experience already under his belt, the Annapolis native began searching for a commercial kitchen where he could operate a catering company and restaurant on the same property. Thirty-some years later, Rusty continues to […]

Meet the Locals: Claudia Hassan

By: Symmetry

Walk into Cafe Olé, a small coffee shop sandwiched between Rams Head Tavern and Stan & Joe’s, and you’ll swear you’ve been there before. It’s the natural, friendly way the barista (and owner) of the store greets you that makes the place seem so familiar. Though the store is small—at 33 ½ West Street, it […]

Meet the Locals: Jim Campbell

By: Symmetry

How does a self-described ‘cheesesteak kind of guy’ from Philadelphia end up in charge of the world’s largest crab feast, ultimately responsible for distributing to upwards of 2,000 people some 340 bushels of crabs, 3,400 ears of corn, 100 gallons of crab soup, 1,800 hot dogs, 150 pounds of beef barbeque, and hundreds of gallons […]

Meet the Locals: Dick Franyo

By: Symmetry

It’s 2:30pm on a frigid Tuesday in January. But when you walk into Dick Franyo’s Boathouse Bar & Grill on Restaurant Row in the historic maritime district of Eastport, it’s easy to feel like you’ve just walked off your boat mid-summer. Pictures of local sailors line the walls, as do quirky knick knacks from Franyo’s […]

CELEBRITY CHEF COMES TO TOWN

By: Mary Lou Baker

Many a celeb has stayed at the Loews Annapolis Hotel, but nobody has taken up permanent residence – until Theodore Folkman came to town last month. Folkman, a passionate chef and craft beer promoter with impressive culinary creds, is the new co-owner of Baroak Cookhouse and Tap Room at this popular hotel. Spacious and airy, with 153 seats indoors and additional tables (some picnic style) seating 90 on outdoor terraces, its modern décor suggests an upscale tavern.

Galway Bay Promises True Tastes of Ireland

By: Mary Lou Baker

Kevin Barry, named after the young 18th century Irish martyr, is the son of a 1993 Naval Academy graduate who did not follow in his father’s footsteps. Instead, he followed his own to …

Savor the Superior Flavor of The Maryland Crab Cake

By: admin

If you’ve ever picked a Maryland blue crab, you know how much work goes into extracting its sweet, delicate meat. So it’s no wonder that an equally popular dish in Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay is the Maryland crab cake. This more refined cousin of its steamed version possesses the same succulent taste but requires […]
